Trust pays tribute to PC Palmer award

THE DECISION to honour PC Palmer with the George Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours has been welcomed by the UK Police Arboretum Memorial Trust (PAMT).

Sir Hugh Order, Chair of Trustees said: “It is vitally important that the courage and sacrifice of PC Palmer who gave his life in such a heroic way is recognised. He tackled terrorist Khalid Masood head on without any consideration of his own safety and sadly paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“This is why we need to establish the new UK Police Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum so a grateful nation can pay tribute to the likes of PC Palmer and the hundreds of other officers and staff who have given their lives through policing for the service of our country.

“The dangers that our police officers and other members of the emergency services face on a daily basis has really been brought home in recent months. When others run from danger they run towards it, without fear or favour, not knowing what the outcomes will be.

“We have a duty to remember and honour all those from our police service who been killed on duty protecting our values and keeping us safe.”

In May a national campaign was launched, in partnership with LBC and Express Newspapers, to help raise funds to build a new UK Police Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. To date, £2.5million of the required £4million needed to establish the Memorial project has been raised.
